Headliners sag because the polyurethane foam between the fabric and the metal roof breaks down. Heat, UV and humidity in NZ summers accelerate it. Once that foam is gone, the fabric loses its bond and starts dropping — usually first above the rear window, then across the entire roof.
The fix done properly: drop the headliner board out of the car, strip the old fabric and the failed foam back to the bare board, re-cover with fresh foam-backed automotive fabric using the right adhesive, and refit. We don't re-glue failed foam. It comes back within months. We do the harder, slower job that actually holds.
Pricing: Most jobs $300–$650 depending on roof size, sunroof, and trim complexity. Free on-site quote before any work starts.

Plenty of headliner jobs come back through our door for a second time — almost always because someone else just sprayed adhesive on the failing fabric. That doesn't fix the actual problem. The polyurethane foam underneath has crumbled into dust, and the fabric is bonded to that dust. Within months, it sags again.
We strip everything back to bare board and re-cover with fresh foam-backed automotive fabric, using high-temperature adhesive rated for the heat behind a NZ windscreen. It costs more time. It holds for years.
Most cars are $300–$650 depending on roof size, sunroof, and trim complexity. SUVs and panoramic roofs sit at the top of that range. We've written a full guide — see our 2026 Auckland cost guide.
Most sedans and hatchbacks are a same-day job. SUVs, wagons, and panoramic-glass cars are usually one full day. We'll tell you upfront when you drop in for a quote.
The foam between the fabric and the board breaks down over 7–15 years depending on the car, climate exposure, and factory adhesive choice. NZ summers and dark-roofed European cars age fastest.
Often — they're some of our most regular customers. European cars sag earlier than Japanese ones because of bigger roof panels and factory adhesive choice. See our European headliner guide.
Yes — we stock colour-matched foam-backed automotive fabric for most makes. For unusual colours we order in and bring options for you to pick on the day.
Sunroofs add about an hour — the shade comes out, gets re-covered, goes back. Panoramic glass adds 2+ hours. Same-day still possible on most non-panoramic cars.
Full or partial reupholstery — seats, panels, carpet sets. Daily drivers, classics, modified builds.
